What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a live open source map available for people to report information? How could this help or hurt emergency personnel?
It seems to be slow to update and slow to load. I feel it can both hurt and help the emergency personnel. While it can help locate problem spots and survivors, there is no way to moderate what is going on. Fake images and videos can be loaded without prior knowledge. This may cause personnel to rush to one location and find it to be a prank while at another location someone is dying.
Some of the advantages of having a live open source map are showing where the spots or areas are the worst. It also has a key for places that have the most health risk, evacuations, electric outages, and etc. This website is open for anybody to link information or videos that deal with the catastrophe. Another advantage to having this website would be for people that live in the area of the accident, so they can find out where to get food, gas, etc. I think this website is more beneficial for people living in the area than out of the area, because the information is more useful to people close to the area. But it could also be useful to news station around the world for footage and information on the spots/areas that are the worse. The disadvantages could be the actual video footage, because there may be bad footage that isn’t helpful and bad camera use. I don’t think there are many disadvantages to this website because the whole point of the website is to help others know what’s going on in the area and where the problems are. This website would be very good for emergency because it could help them know if they should go in a certain area. It can also tell the emergency what streets are flooded and what places need the most help.

If you had a relative that lived in New Zealand and they were there when the earthquake hit, you would want to know if they were okay. With this map, you can see what’s going on right there so you don’t have to worry that the worst case scenario is happening. Another advantage would be that people who experienced the earthquake could make videos so other people could see what was really happening. But there are some disadvantages too, like people could post fake videos. This could lead people in the wrong way and they may get untruthful information. That could also lead emergency personnel in the wrong direction and more people might die because of it. Other than that disadvantage the whole idea is a very good one and it would be cool to see it for other natural disasters.

Anyone can access the site and look at the map to find out what is going on in an area that has been hit with something such as an earthquake. In Christchurch, New Zealand, there was a catastrophic earthquake on February 22nd. It destroyed most of the town’s buildings and roads. On the Earth Quake Map, there are many different things you can click on to find out more information on the event. There are multiple You Tube videos that show coverage of the damage and people’s reactions, and there are a lot of pictures available as well. There are also many little icons that have information. The icons are color coded and include property damage, road affected, trusted reports, evacuations, electric outages, help services, and health risks. There is only about one disadvantage for the site, and it is that anyone can post information for everyone to see, so the people checking the site have to make sure it is all accurate and serious.

Anyone who decides to help over in New Zealand can know where they are able to see where the places are that they shouldn't go and also where people need help the most. This feature is very helpful, because people that live in different countries like us can see what has recently been updated and what new things have happened. There are many different Youtube videos and maps that show the different levels of destruction. The Youtube videos show videos of people taping the destruction as it was happening live. This map and website can be very helpful to different people later in the future with all of the different natural disasters occuring in the world.
