Read the information on the link below then brainstorm and record some ideas for a class project.

  2. There are multiple ideas for common uses of GIS technology such as the common in car navigation system, map directions online to find a address and so on. These are the most practical ideas however, these are relatively hard to extrapolate to a class. With that said we have to take a step back, and evaluate relatively complicated but simple ideas. A good idea would be to relate current social issues to the class. For instance "going green" has become common in society. you could possible use a GPS system to find the best area to place wind turbines and so forth. Another idea would be to create a virtual on campus map. You could create 3d buildings, and a virtual display of all the buildings on a campus giving individuals a "virtual tour" of the school, and even the administrator may support this idea. This could also be beneficial for companies, and business alike.

  3. ***Accidents Involving Deer Collisions for the Years 2000 and 2005
Using Maine DOT data, the students analyzed motor vehicle accidents involving deer in 2000 and 2005. Analysis involved factors such as time of day, road conditions and weather, to check their influence on the cause of accidents with deer.

****A Look at Bald Eagle Nesting Sites in Penobscot and Aroostook County, Maine
The study was an analysis of bald eagle habitat. It examined distance to waterbodies and the human population within the area of bald eagle nests. The findings in Penobscot County were then projected to Aroostook County to locate desirable eagle habitat.

  4. Esri industry pages would be very interesting because it has articles and videos in it. Like open source mapping, I really liked when we examined Christ Church earthquake. Or maybe for a big project we could look at mapping websites and blog about what we have learned and how we can get better at mapping. The thing I really want to do is something with open source mapping because it's useful all around the world and would be something I might look at in the future for help.

  5. ESRI map books sounds like it would be really fun to work with, because you can look up many different disasters that occurred where you could use different applications of GIS. You can use many different videos and stories that in which the GIS applications have been used. The ESRI map books have many different volumes to and do not limit the different kinds of information that you can find out and investigate. There are always new things developing that we can investigate about from population in the three main colleges (IOWA, Iowa State, and UNI)from in coming freshman to seniors. We have been looking at many different through out the past semester and have given us great ideas.

  6. our class could create a map of the uni dome and Mcleod then highlight all the hotels within a 5 mile radius, this would help tourists and people coming in for high school state and where they could stay.

  7. @ Taryn...How could we incorporate those ideas into something for our community? @ Alex...How could we use use open source data here in the Cedar Valley? @bdog...Where might we find the data for incoming freshman to UNI? @Brandon...How will we create the 3D buildings of the campus...or were you talking about our building (PLS)?

  8. We could use the accidents involving deer collisions in the Cedar Valley so that people know what times and places they are most likely to be crossing the roads. This would help people maybe choose another route if they are frequently in danger. We could help save money, cars, deer, and people.

  9. We could make a map and find videos of the local area and put them on the map, but it might not work out as good because we aren't a big city and we need more articles and videos on our local area. I'm sure we could find plenty of articles about the local area but I don't know about to many videos. Just a cool idea to make a open source map!

  10. We could do this by maybe trying to find out how many people are planning on coming to UNI, whether that on scholarships or just because they liked the college, the only thing is: is are we able to find out this information or would it be to complicated.

  11. @Taryn...could we try to cross reference deer accidents with deer crossing road signs? How are the location of those signs determined?
@bdog...could we get address information (city only) from UNI to map?

  12. we could already use the tools at our disposal. Take different coordinated points around our school entrances, gym, track, main roads leading to the building and so on. With those points we could then use ArcGIS or community atlas to evaluate those points. with these points we could then use supporting materials on these tools such as pictures, verbal descriptions from teachers and students, and we could possible track with our GPS the distance and time from our homes to the school to give new incoming faculty and students an idea of the politics of the school and travel time. We would already have the tools to do this project, and it would be beneficial to the class, administration, and possibly new incoming individuals.

  13. however, with this said it would not take long nor be a challenge, so if were looking for a project to fill the rest of the time to the end of the year this may not be the best idea..as that it would only take a week to get the data, and a week to make the presentation.
